| My work with Horses & People A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. My work with horses is like this, step by step. It is a progression of tasks where each new step builds on the previous. Where the horse is ‘challenged’ but not sent into a zone of fear and trepidation. This requires ‘feel’ and patience. Working like this, I can build a history of good learning experiences for the horse. This provides the horse with the foundation for a deep and abiding relationship built on trust and respect. So the work is at the horse’s pace, not mine. A young horse that has always been well treated will progress more quickly than an older horse that has been ill treated and has issues. In this respect I must take my lead from the horse. The horse is always right. I ask and ask again but avoid ‘telling’ or making demands of the horse. If the horse fails to heed my asking for a task, then I ask for a smaller step. To begin, the work it is at the end of a lead rope on long walks in the forest and on the beach where I establish boundaries and get the horse to work off my breath, cues and body. This is also where I begin work with transitions, walk to trot, trot to canter and back again. read more |
